In addition to providing access to basic services, a transit plan is vital to improving the quality of life for tribal community members, reconnecting the communities, increasing road safety, reducing emissions, exercising tribal self-determination, improving transportation equity, and strengthening the local economy. Public transit can be vital to improving the quality of life in rural areas for community members with disabilities, individuals or families living below the poverty level, for community members without a driver’s license, for households without cars, and for strengthening the economy by better connecting Fort Berthold segments and region. Community input is very important to help ensure that the proposed transit system satisfies the needs of the people, and that the people actually use the system when it becomes operational. The Fort Berthold Comprehensive Regional Transportation Plan is a regional study and inventory of all modes of transportation (rail, highway safety, road, public transit, ferry service, aviation, pipelines and electric transmission) on Fort Berthold and the surrounding region in order to define, plan and implement direct action that addresses our existing and future transportation needs. The goal of the Fort Berthold Comprehensive Regional Transportation Plan is to address the communities’ transportation needs that are essential to increasing transportation safety, supporting our economy, reconnecting our communities, and providing better access to health care, jobs, emergency services, and education.
